Bulkhead Flat Car

53 1/2' GSC Bulkhead Flat car

This bulkhead flatcar is accurately scaled from the General Steel Casting 53 1/2' bulkhead flat car.   The car was first produced in the 1950's with a complete cast frame by the General Steel Casting Co.   It was produced for a variety of railroads and can still occasionally be seen in use today.

All steel parts are laser cut and slide together to form the frame and car ends.   Once welded the frame forms of a double I-beam  providing exceptional strength and stiffness.   The bulkheads are preformed and aligned by tabs and slots.  All holes for the decking, grab irons, and stirrup steps are laser cut.   The deck consists of 131 predrilled and counter bored white oak deck boards 7/16" thick.   Notice how the center hole spacing widens toward the middle of the car to follow the contour of the frame below.
